W. Dion Hundley known as Deac. Began his career in Elgin,Illinois building and racing cars. In 1960 GM hired Deac to test drive their newly engineered rear engine 6 cylinder air cooled car. Showcasing the rugged sporty economy car. The Corvair. The trip began in Illinois and ended up through the jungles of South American on the then unfinsihed Pan American Hwy. The promotional film shot was called Daring The Darien. After a bout with Maleria Deac was air lifted from the jungle but had proven the Corvair could handle any terrain. In the 1970's Deac relocated to Florida and built Old Town. A great place for families to enjoy the spirit of the Old West in a carnival like atmosphere. In 1990 he introduced a moving cruise down Main Street of the town he and his brother built. Today the Saturday Night Cruise remains the longest running weekly cruise in Florida. Sadly, In 2002 Deac passed away, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering spirit and his love of cars. He brough the Corvair National attention and we are grateful for everything he has contributed to our wonderful hobby and the part he played in the introduction of the Corvair to the American public. It is with the blessing of his family that we award the Best Overall Participant at our Corvair Family Reunion Show, The Deac Hundley Award of Excellence-sponsored by Old Town, in Deac's Memory.
